WelfareLab2050 Sprint #1: Policy Focus in person before IPPE

Jan 26, 2026

Sprint #1 – How can IPWA collaborate with IPC members to shape science-based poultry welfare policy?
If you are attending please complete this short pre-meeting survey: WelfareLab 2050 Pre Meeting Survey – Collaboration

What Is WelfareLab 2050?

WelfareLab2050 is a global initiative coordinated by the International Poultry Welfare Alliance working to improve animal welfare science, policy, and implementation through a structured, multi-stage approach spanning 2025–2050. The initiative builds on the 2024 Icebreaker Series, which brought together voices and expertise from around the world to identify the significant issues in poultry welfare, looking ahead to 2050.

WelfareLab 2050 takes on the major issues identified by stakeholders. It begins to identify tangible actions that IPWA, its members, and partners can use to functionally advance and influence these priority areas in the coming years. Starting this year, IPWA will continue to have in-depth sprints with focus groups of different expertise to identify these actions.

Why IPC for Sprint #1?

The goal of WelfareLab 2050 is to improve welfare science, policy, and implementation. This approach respects variability in types of production systems and the point at which different regions are in their welfare journey. IPWA wants to collaborate with IPC and its Members to draft ideas and understand what is needed to advance science-based poultry welfare policies so that the outcomes of this effort are helpful across a diverse landscape of political climates worldwide.

Following the conclusion of the IPC meetings on Monday, January 26th, please attend a facilitated, interactive discussion to help shape the future direction of poultry welfare worldwide. Contact emyhre@poultryegg.org for any details.

One Health and Sustainability Webinar:

May 6, 2026

Join us May 6 from 2:00–2:45 PM (ET) for a webinar with Dr. Michelle Kromm, board-certified poultry veterinarian and founder of Food Forward LLC, as she explores how One Health principles connect animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and resilient food systems. In this session, Dr. Kromm will discuss how coordinated approaches across animal health, human health, and environmental stewardship can strengthen sustainability initiatives within poultry production. Drawing on her experience in animal health, antimicrobial stewardship, and food system risk management, she will highlight practical ways One Health programs can align welfare outcomes with broader sustainability goals across the poultry value chain.

Welfarelab2050 Sprint #2 Science and Implementation

Jul 14, 2026

Tuesday July 14 12-1:30 Congress lunch for 125 in Room  #MTCC 701 A

This Lunch & Learn is designed as a science-to-implementation working session focused on extracting practical insight from poultry welfare research and strengthening how that science translates into real-world decision-making.

Building on insights from a recent policy-focused sprint with IPC, this session brings those findings back to the scientific community to test assumptions, validate interpretations, and identify where the evidence base is strong, evolving, or insufficient.

Rather than focusing on policy alone, the discussion will center on how welfare science is generated, interpreted, and applied and where gaps in data, framing, or communication limit its impact in practice.

Participants will help define priority research questions, clarify where existing science is being misunderstood or underutilized, and identify the types of outputs—such as applied summaries, decision frameworks, or targeted studies that would strengthen the connection between science, implementation, and policy outcomes.

Advancing HPAI Vaccination in Poultry: Readiness, Trade, and Real-World Tradeoffs

Jul 22, 2026

Join Dr. Michelle Kromm and Dr. John Clifford for an in-depth discussion on highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and the evolving considerations around vaccination in the United States. This webinar will explore why U.S. poultry flocks remain unvaccinated against H5 influenza, unpacking the complex balance between disease mitigation, trade implications, and industry-wide risk management.

Drawing from the published analysisthe session will examine key barriers and current strategies in light of ongoing global outbreaks.

This conversation offers a timely, science-informed perspective for industry stakeholders navigating the intersection of animal health, policy, and international trade.

Elena will be attending on belahf of IPWA. IPWA will share a scientific presentation on the Kwy Welfare Indicator Training Modules.

The International Poultry Welfare Alliance Key Welfare Indicator (KWI) Guides provide a science-based, outcomes-driven approach to assessing welfare across broilers, layers, and turkeys. IPWA has created aligned KWI Training Modules, they support the application of these insights consistently in real-world settings. The KWI training presentation and sample workshop will showcase the training modules and highlight the continuous improvement IPWA supports for poultry welfare globally.

Together, these resources support stronger welfare outcomes, better alignment across operations, and more credible communication across the value chain.
